Hotel Near Belfast City Hall

HOTEL NEAR BELFAST CITY HALL

At the heart of the city stands the iconic landmark, Belfast City Hall. Construction of this magnificent structure started in 1898, a year after Belfast was recognised as a city by Queen Victoria, due to its growing economy driven by the linen, rope-making, shipbuilding and engineering industry. The building is designed in a beautiful Baroque revival style which has inspired other cities to imitate, and has since been Belfast’s most famous landmark.

Today, you can join one of the free daily tours offered to the public where you can explore the grounds which features famous statues and memorials. These include Queen Victoria, Sir Edward Harland, former head of the Harland and Wolff and once mayor of Belfast, the Titanic Memorial in remembrance to the victims of the RMS Titanic, and the Garden of Remembrance and Cenotaph in remembrance of those who died in the line of duty during the World War. At night, the entire City Hall comes to life with floodlights illuminating the building, using the same technology used at the Empire State Building in New York.

While the grounds are most popular to tourists and locals hanging out during their break, you don’t want to miss the interior of this historic building. Noteworthy features include The Port-Cochere and Grand Entrance, The Grand Staircase, The Reception Room and The Great Hall. The majestic marbles used and the stained glass windows all gave a grandiose effect as soon as you walk in.
