HOTEL NEAR STORMONT BUILDINGS

Commonly known as Stormont, this “great white house up on the hill” is home to the recently defunct Northern Ireland Assembly, the legislative body for Northern Ireland established under the Belfast Agreement 1998 or the Good Friday Agreement.

The Parliament Building’s imposing architecture was designed by architect Sir Arnold Thornely, who was knighted by King George V for his contribution in architecture.  His design is well-known for its perfect symmetry and symbolism.  For instance, Stormont is 365 feet wide representing one foot for every day of the year and has six floors and six pillars at the entrance, representing each county in Northern Ireland.  It was built in 1921 and was constructed to house the then newly formed Government of Northern Ireland.  It was officially opened on 16 November 1932 by then Prince of Wales, on behalf of King George V.

As well as high profile news stories that uncover many a political drama here, there is also an atmosphere of tranquility and freshness in the air as you meander through the majestic lawns and flowerbeds of the forest walks that make up Stormont Estate.  Perfect for family days out and picnics and host to many music events.
